Awarded The Victoria Cross in 1885 (Gazetted 12 May 1885). For action after the "square" was broken during a native attack. Now kept in the Royal Artillery Regimental Museum, at Woolwich. 
The back was wrongly engraved as Gunner Albert SMITH.
 
Buried on the 12th January 1932. The grave was left unmarked until 1986 when a memorial was raised by his 176(Abu Klea) Battery.
